13-Day Wild East Africa in Style
Begin your journey in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. There is nothing better than sharing a moment with wild gorillas in these magnificent alpine forests. Next: Ngorongoro Crater, where you can put your feet up and enjoy game drives and the spectacular views over this primordial land. A trip to Tanzania would not be complete without the Serengeti plains and the wide array of animals that call this place home. End your journey in Zanzibar, with water so clear swimming feels like flying.

Day 1-3 Go ape with the giant mountain gorillas of Rwanda
At Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, in the foothills of Rwanda's Virunga range, you're just a short trek away from mountain gorilla territory, home to the world's most endangered great apes – the same giants that the late Dian Fossey introduced to the world. Just 790 or so of the gorillas remain, so an encounter is a definite privilege. Surrounded by lush vegetation and mist-crowned volcanoes, the lodge is the perfect place from which to start your guided trek. Gorilla treks are clearly the prime reason for visiting, but other interesting outings are also offered. Hike to see the playful golden monkeys that are endemic to the high-altitude forests of the Volcanoes Park; explore the seven-hectare Sabyinyo property to see the 40-plus bird species that shelter here; investigate the surroundings and local villages on foot or mountain bike (with a guide); or visit the nearby twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo and the ecologically important Buhanga Sacred Forest.

Day 4 Trekking is hard work - indulge in some five-star pampering
This large, modern hotel in central Kigali lies just 10 kilometres from Kigali International Airport, so it's the perfect stopover before returning home. It's a large hotel, popular for weddings and conferences (held fortunately in a large stand-alone conference and events centre). The rooms are quiet though, so take some down time, enjoy the varied cuisine at the restaurants, wander around the lush gardens and laze around the pool. And do visit the blissful spa. If you're simply overnighting, you'll probably only have time to enjoy the food, the pool and maybe a treatment at the spa. For families with young children, there's also a baby pool. Want to stay a little longer? Explore Kigali (ask for advice at reception), visit the sobering Kigali Genocide Memorial and admire the bright artworks at the Inema Gallery.

Day 5-6 Wallow in opulent style on the rim of a vast crater
Voted one of the top 10 hotels on the planet, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is undoubtedly one of the most opulent lodges in Africa. And yet, while no expense has been spared to ensure your every need is catered for, the main attraction is the lodge's setting – on the rim of the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Both lodge and crater lie at the heart of a conservation area that is home to an astonishing selection of wildlife, including hippo, antelope, buffalo, black rhino, one of the highest carnivore densities in the world and plentiful bird species. Morning and evening game drives take 20–30 minutes to reach the crater floor. (TIP: Pre-order breakfast to take on a morning drive; there's nowhere better to have it.) The lodge also offers guided walking safaris around the crater rim, visits to a Maasai cultural village to browse through the crafts, and excursions to beautiful lakes Ndutu and Eyasi or the Olduvai Gorge. Or simply relax and enjoy the views.

Day 7-9 Witness the awe inspiring spectacle of the Serengeti
This permanent camp is actually divided into two camps, with a private lodging camp with it own facilities. Both are beautifully poised amongst the rocks of the Kogakuria Kopjies in the Northern Serengeti. They are well appointed with a simple, undemanding elegance that does not detract from the wilderness exterior. Enjoy spectacular views of the grasslands, teeming with wildlife, especially when the migration moves through the area. In the Serengeti National Park, game drives are the best way to cover larger areas during expeditions. This is further enhanced with a full day's game drive, picnic included. Bush walks are offered depending on the length of grass, with the intention of interpreting and encountering the small animals of the bush including reptiles, birds and insects. Dining in the bush with the sounds of the wilds all around is a unique experience not to be missed. The swimming pool is the ideal place to unwind during the heat of the day.

Day 10-12 Relax in a truly remote and exclusive barefoot paradise
Mnemba Island is a real gem, laced with soft, white-sand beaches and surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. From the moment you land, time stops and your senses heighten – that's how far you are from city mayhem. With just 10 private beach bandas that somehow manage to combine rustic simplicity with utter luxury, you can be as active, or not, as you wish. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, take star-lit dinners on the beach and visit the dive centre to explore the coral reefs and their colourful fish. This fully equipped dive centre offers everything you need for snorkelling, sea-kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. If it's fishing that excites you, then fly-fishing and deep-sea fishing trips are also available. If you're visiting between February and September, take a guided visit to see threatened green turtles nesting. Look out for dolphins, whale sharks, lots of birds and 600-odd species of coral reef fish. Or chill with a massage on the beach.
