Tanzania Safari Circuit: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire Combined

What Is the Tanzania Safari Circuit?

The Tanzania safari circuit combines the three most celebrated wildlife destinations in northern Tanzania into a single itinerary: Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. This circuit, typically completed in 7–12 days, is considered one of the definitive African safari experiences and one of the most wildlife-rich itineraries on the continent.

The Three Destinations Explained

Serengeti National Park

Tanzania’s flagship safari destination at 14,763 km². Home to the Great Wildebeest Migration — the annual movement of 1.5 million wildebeest, 350,000 zebra, and 500,000 gazelle in a continuous cycle around the ecosystem. The Serengeti also supports exceptional resident wildlife year-round including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and buffalo.

Ngorongoro Crater

A collapsed volcanic caldera 19.2 km across and 600 m deep. The crater floor (260 km²) holds the highest density of large mammals in Africa — approximately 25,000–30,000 animals including the Big Five, flamingos on the soda lake, and one of Africa’s last free-ranging black rhino populations (approximately 26 individuals as of 2024).

Tarangire National Park

Tanzania’s underrated gem. The Tarangire River is the dry-season magnet for wildlife from across the ecosystem — during June–October, Tarangire holds the largest elephant concentration in East Africa (approximately 3,000 elephants converge around the river). Also famous for its giant baobab trees, reliable bird watching with 550+ species, and far fewer vehicles than the Serengeti.
